5 Tips for Living With Others

I live with 2 of my friends I’ve known for years but I know moving out will be a different experience if you’re moving into accommodation with strangers but these are tips I think would help in both situations to make your time more enjoyable!

1. Set Expectations 📝

If you’re planning on moving with friends this is much easier as you kind of already know each others values and having those in common is probably why you’re choosing to live together. If you’re moving in with strangers expectations around cleaning, shopping, noises and guests etc is something you should discuss early on to avoid arguments.

2. Respect each others space and things🪴

Don’t leave shared spaces a mess! You’re all living there and even if you don’t care for mess but one of your roommates has previously said it bothers them, then out of respect for them tidy up! Living together means you most likely will use each others things but make sure to ask first, your room mate will probably say yes but just taking the time to ask is so much more respectful and avoids conflicts.

3. Split Costs Evenly💷

This one obviously depends on the situation but in my flat we split everything evenly for example if we do a big food shop we all split the price but if you and your flatmates have decided you will all buy food separately obviously this will be different. But make sure you’re all contributing, even if you decided to split costs differently.

4. Communicate!🗣️

This is definitely the most important one and comes into everything. If you have an issue with some thing your roommates doing, tell them don’t let the tension build up, it doesn’t have to be an argument. Communication is also key with how you’re all feeling, we’re all human, we all have emotions and good and bad days. Maybe you’re having a bad day and want to keep to yourself, just tell your roommates you’re not feeling great it’s better than them maybe taking it personally.

5. Make a Shared Calendar🗓️

These are so good literally just for knowing when everyone’s going to be in or when people are meant to be home. It helps make plans too as you can see what days and times you're all free☺️ We have a whiteboard calendar on our fridge but if you don’t like this there loads of apps you can use as well!

Tips For Moving Out For The First Time

Moving out especially for the first time can be overwhelming! For most of us it’s our first time being fully independent so I’ve made some tips to help prepare you and hopefully make the process less stressful. These tips based on my own experience of moving out so may not be relevant to everyone but I hope at least some help! 1. Prepare financially 💰 This first one is obvious but is so important! It’s not only rent you need to think about its bills, council tax, food, furniture etc. I’d recommend trying to save up a few months of rent before you plan to move, this helps for if you end up moving out sooner than expected or for example if you're waiting on a student loan it keeps you covered. I’d work out how much your rent and bills will be and when you get paid make sure you put that amount away, we have a bank account with sections for rent and different bills and we have direct debits come out when we get paid. If you’re a student you’ll be exempt for council tax but make sure ...
